Over the weekend, the lawyers’ community under their body, Uganda Law Society (ULS) elected a new executive committee to replace the outgoing one headed by Simon Peter Kinobe who has held the office for the last two years
Leading the four women led team is Pheona Nabasa Wall who garnered 441 votes against her closest contender Bernard Oundo’s 427. Other contenders are Nelson Walusimbi who got 239, Rashid Semambo 212 and Anne Karungi 47votes who came in the second position in the Saturday elections held across different polling stations in the country.
Diana Angwech was elected as vice president while Ritah Namakiika was unopposed as the ULS secretary and Shane Gloria Musanase-Mugenga as treasurer.
Here below, we bring you the profiles of the four women, who will be heading the ULS Executive team for the next one year term.
Pheona Nabasa Wall – President

Pheona Wall Nabasa is an advocate, a governance professional and a public relations practitioner spanning over 15 years’ experience in legal risk management, regulatory compliance, projects, infrastructure and construction law, board affairs and stakeholder relations management. She is currently serving as the Senior Manager Legal Services National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), a position she has held since June 2014.
She is ULS incoming President after beating off competition from her closest rival, Benard Oundo making her the fourth female president in the history of ULS after Justice Solome Bosa (current judge at the International Criminal Court), Ms Diana Musoke and Ms Ruth Sebatindira.
Pheona has been the Vice President, Uganda Law Society since April 2018 as well as Chairperson of the Legal Aid and Pro Bono Project of the Uganda Law Society.
Pheona who describes herself as being passionate about mentoring young people combines a solid corporate legal background with a well-developed understanding of both commercial and operational drivers of business and has served on various Boards including Water FC, Future Investments Group, East African Young Water Professionals, Uganda Law Society, and Public Relations Association of Uganda. She is also the Patron of the KIU Law Society
She is also a member of various organisations like ICGU, FIDA, IBA, PRAU, ULS and EALS.
Pheona was awarded the Hague Institute for Innovations in Law “2018 Talent to Watch” award and is a New Vision 40 under 40 finalists for 2018.
She is a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Makerere University, a Diploma in Legal Practice and an MBA in Management.
Diana Angwech – Vice President

Diana Angwech, the new ULS Vice President is an advocate with 10 years of exceptional legal practice.
Diana has been privileged to hold many positions of leadership in various sectors including the legal field. She enjoys public engagements, creating platforms to foster mentoring relationships, events management and every opportunity to pass on knowledge whether in a formal setting or a one on one.
She is currently the Advocate & Business Development Manager at Shonubi Musoke & Co. since July 2018. Before that she was Head of Legal Department at Center for Public Interest Law for duration of 1 year and 6 months between Jan 2017 and Jun 2018.
Between Jun 2011 and Dec 2016, Diana was Staff Attorney at International Justice Mission for 5 years and 7 months. Before that, she was a Legal Associate at ROK Advocates.
She has also held various responsibilities including Chairman for Young Lawyers Committee under the Executive Council of the Uganda Law Society, since 2018. She has as well since Sep 2005 been a member of Uganda Lawyers Fraternity, a body of Christian lawyers and advocates whose aim is to provide legal aid to the community.
Diana holds Bachelor’s degree of Laws from Makerere University
Shane Gloria Musanase – Treasurer

Shane Gloria Musanase is an Advocate and legal Consultantwielding over 13 years’ experience as a legal practitioner and ably providing business consultancy and legal services to several persons regarding the incorporation of business, their restructuring as well as winding up of entities.
Her experience in commercial transactions ranges from capital markets, energy, telecommunications, transport, infrastructure projects, debt recovery, general litigation, arbitration and mediation.
The new Treasurer of ULS is currently a partner at Apio, Byabazaire, Musanase & CO. Advocates currently, in charge of Finance of the firm since April 2017.
Before that, she was an Associate at SM Registrars LTD (Shonubi, Musoke & Co Advocates between Dec 2012 until Dec 2016.
Shane also sits as a Member, Director and or Corporation Secretary on a number of Boards of companies and provides guidance on compliance, good corporate governance practices as well as international best practice. She is a member of Uganda and East Africa law societies.
Shane holds Bachelor’s degree from Makerere University as well as Master of Laws in International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. Shane also attained a certification of Executive Education under The Effective Director Executive Program from Strathmore Business School in July 2014.
She is also an accredited Mediator having obtained a certificate from the California State Bar in partnership with the Intellectual Property Rights Initiative.
Rita Namakiika Nangono – Secretary

Rita is a practicing lawyer and a founding partner of N and N Advocates. She has over 10 years’ experience in strategic planning and facilitation, organizational development and capacity building as well as budget management advocacy work and constituency building and development and grants management.
She is one of the Founders of Swing Seeds of Tumaini and brings on board a wealth of knowledge of legal practice and human rights.
As a woman she is very passionate about empowering rural women especially farmers who are being exploited at the farm and at the market arena as well.
