Africell head office in Kampala. The telecom will stop operations in Uganda next month

Africell will stop its services in Uganda on October 7 2021. The telecom operator says the decision is being made in the long-term interests of the Ugandan telecoms sector.

“…the decision is being made in the long-term interests of the Ugandan telecoms sector. However, it has an immediate impact on many people – including you a valued Africell employee. Africell UG promised to communicate clearly during this transition, treat you with respect, to offer support which helps you find new professional opportunities,” the telecom operator states in a notice to employees. It adds: “The last day of your employment with Africell UG will be 30 November 2021.”

In addition to full salary and benefits during the notice period, Africell UG employees will receive severance pay, payment of unused annual leave allowance, repatriation pay (where applicable) and training and support from a dedicated on-site professional.

Last week, the CEO East Africa Magazine exclusively broke the news of Africell leaving Ugandan after the telecom company failed to compete with industry giants MTN and Airtel.

The move to exit Uganda has largely been accelerated by a difficult business environment brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, although the telecom itself was already in free-fall.

In September 2019, the CEO East Africa Magazine reported about how Africell was struggling having accumulated over UGX1.5 trillion in losses and UGX258.3bn in debts. Some of the losses were inherited from their predecessors, Orange Uganda whose operations they took over in 2014.
