Nile Breweries Limited, a subsidiary of global brewing giants Anheuser-Busch InBev ( AB InBev), is investigating a number of its staff in the sales and marketing units over fraud. The fraud investigation has also dragged in several of its third-party partners and service providers, such as distributors and sponsees.

It is alleged that staff in the sales and marketing departments have been creating either fictitious sponsorships and then drawing and sharing the money with staff and other third-party partners involved in the bogus schemes. Another allegation being investigated is that staff have been colluding with sponsees to overinflate bills, and the balance would be shared.

Key investigations are focused on sales leadership, including District Sales Managers and Trade Marketing and Channel Marketing managers.

Amou Majok, the former Country Marketing Lead, resigned late last year.

However, Emmanuel Njuki, the Country Legal and Corporate Affairs Lead, insists she “resigned on her own volition, citing personal reasons.”

The company also denied recent media reports that several staff had been fired in relation to the investigation as it was still ongoing.

“There has been no firing of employees at Nile Breweries related to the context,” Mr. Njuki wrote in an email to CEO East Africa Magazine. However, he confirmed that an investigation was ongoing.

“It’s true that there is an audit of the business. The business routinely conducts financial, project and even performance audits. Should the current audit reveal any information that requires management action, it will be undertaken according to our business policies and should there be a need to communicate these decisions, we will,” he further wrote.
