Understanding Chat GPT: A Conversation with Chat GPT itself Unless you have been living under a rock, you must have heard about Chat GPT. The AI Bot has caused excitement across the globe and has been touted as the next Google killer, job killer (looking at you writers and lawyers etc). The excitement is partly due to the fact that true innovation and building technology that provides the "wow factor" has returned to Silicon Valley. I mean, Chat GPT even passed the US Medical Licensing Board exams. That means it can prescribe medication based on your ailment entered into the chat. It has also wreaked havoc globally with schools in New York making moves to ban students from using it for writing essays and homework.

On February 2nd, Chat GPT surpassed 100m users just two months after launch. This is the fastest that any consumer app had taken to reach 100m users. For comparison, it took TikTok 9 months after launch to reach 100m users, while Instagram took two years. 

Personally, as a writer, I have been using Chat GPT to lessen the times it takes me to write an article. Instead of writing an article for two hours, I can use Chat GPT to lessen it by 30-40 mins. I know a lot of software developers have ditched Stack Overflow for Chat GPT when writing their code. 

Chat GPT is part of the wider artificial Intelligence (AI) craze that’s sweeping the world. There are various AI tools that one can use to perform various roles. A few examples are Midjourney, an AI tool to generate images; Ocoya, a tool to create and schedule social media content, Copy AI which increases conversations and Beatoven, an AI tool to create unique royalty-free music. 

But for this article, we will focus on Chat GPT. I could sit down and do desktop research about Chat GPT or speak to industry veterans to understand what OpenAI has developed, but I thought interviewing Chat GPT itself would make this article interesting. So I “sat down” with Chat GPT, and in Chat GPT’s own text, this is the story of Chat GPT. 

Chat GPT, describe yourself in detail. Who are you and who built you?

I am ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI. I am a deep learning-based artificial intelligence model that can generate human-like text based on the input I receive. I was trained on a large corpus of text data and can generate responses to various types of questions and prompts.

I am designed to answer questions and respond to prompts with natural language text. I do not have emotions or personal experiences, I simply generate text based on patterns I learned from the data I was trained on.

You keep talking about AI. What is AI? And why is AI making inroads in the market?

As a language model AI, I can explain that AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, which refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are designed to think and act like humans. This is achieved through the development of algorithms and computer programs that enable machines to process information, learn from data, and make decisions.

Anyway, what is OpenAI? 

OpenAI is a research organization and technology company based in San Francisco, founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman. Its focus is on creating and promoting friendly AI that benefits humanity as a whole.

OpenAI has received funding from a variety of investors, including Reid Hoffman, Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and others. Its current valuation is not publicly disclosed.

OpenAI’s work covers a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence, including deep learning, reinforcement learning, and generative models, among others. When did OpenAI begin developing Chat GPT? What challenges did they face and how did they overcome them?

The investment also helps to strengthen the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI, enabling them to work together on creating innovative AI solutions that can benefit businesses and individuals alike.

Does the investment mean that Chat GPT will be integrated into Bing?

It is possible that the investment by Microsoft in OpenAI could lead to the integration of chat GPT into Bing, Microsoft’s search engine. However, there is no official announcement or information available that confirms this. It is possible that the investment will be used to support the development of new AI technologies and applications, but the specifics of how Microsoft will utilize OpenAI’s technology are still unclear. Do you think ChatGPT is a threat to Google’s stronghold on the search market?

As a language model AI language model, Chat GPT is not designed to directly compete with search engines like Google. However, the technology behind GPT could be used to create AI-powered search tools and applications that could potentially challenge the dominant position of Google in the search market.

The AI-powered language models developed by OpenAI are incredibly advanced and capable of generating human-like responses to a wide range of questions and prompts. How does Chat GPT make money?

Doesn’t Chat GPT have a premium model that costs USD42 a month?

(For context, various sources including The Verge, reported that OpenAI was exploring ways to monetize its AI Chatbot ChatGPT. It gave users the opportunity to get early access to “ChatGPT Professional”. Some users claimed the pro tier costs USD42 a month, but there has been no official announcement. On 1st February, Chat GPT announced its premium version, dubbed Chat GPT Plus that will cost USD20 a month)
