A team of dam construction experts from the Chinese firm, Sinohydro Corporation has arrived in the country to carry out a thorough assessment of the cracks reported in the spillway section of the dam and recommend course of action.

The Corporation has put on hold work in that section of the dam pending further investigations. This follows a meeting with Energy Minister Irene Muloni and officials from Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) during a recent site tour.

Sinohydro Corporation’s Karuma Dam Deputy Project Manager Mr. Deng reassured the public that construction of other aspects of the dam is progressing well within schedule.

The Main Access Tunnel (MAT) which is 1322 meters long excavated through tonnes of rocks leading to where the underground caverns (Powerhouse, Main Transformer Cavern and Surge Chamber) are located is going on smoothly.

Explaining the task, Xu Sheng Jian the Head of Technical Department, said excavation of the Main Transfer Cavern was completed on 20th March 2016.

“The Powerhouse excavation work is going on as scheduled. We have excavated 75% of the benches so far. Engineers are working around the clock to finish this critical milestone of the project. Inside these benches is where each of the six generators will be installed. Each generator with a capacity of 100 MW will rest in the benches, housed in each hole measuring 23×19.6 meters (LxW). The excavation work of the Powerhouse is expected to be completed by October this year,
