Hima Cement has entered the last phase of distributing coffee seedlings in Kasese and Kamwenge districts with 1.1 million more coffee seedlings distributed this planting season. The new seedlings will see the company complete distribution of about 14.2 million coffee seedlings done in various phases since April 2012.
The cement manufacturer has spent Ushs 2 billion on this project aimed at boosting coffee production in Kasese and Kamwenge districts as well as improve the incomes of at least 45,000 smallholder farmers.
Hima Cement’s Industrial Ecology Coordinator, Stephen Barikurungi said, “The project has been a success to both the Plant and the community at large. The survival rate of the coffee we have distributed to and planted by the community is 75%.
