For many professionals in Kampala, life rarely slows down. Meetings, deadlines, traffic jams, and endless notifications fill every hour.
While the idea of driving for hours to reach a national park is tempting, it often slips to the bottom of the calendar. Yet the need to reconnect with nature, breathe fresh air, and experience something unforgettable never fades.
Just 36 kilometres from Kampala, tucked into the quiet countryside of Butambala District, lies a remarkable solution: CTC Conservation Center.
This privately run wildlife sanctuary brings the African wilderness within easy reach of the city. In less than an hour, the roar of traffic fades and is replaced by rustling grass, curious zebras, melodic bird calls, playful lemurs, and the rare privilege of standing just metres from young lions.

Close, accessible, and transformative, CTC is redefining how Ugandans experience wildlife.
A conservation vision born close to the city
Established in 2015, CTC Conservation Center was founded on a simple but powerful belief: wildlife conservation can thrive alongside education, tourism, and community engagement, without requiring long-distance travel.
The team behind CTC describes their approach as “Conservation Through Commercialisation”, a model that supports rescued wildlife, expands protected habitats, and reinvests revenue into long-term conservation efforts.
Although the center is still developing additional visitor facilities such as cottages and dining areas, public interest has exceeded expectations.
Families, corporate groups, tourists, schools, and wildlife enthusiasts have all shown strong demand, even before the official grand opening.
As a result, CTC currently operates limited visits by appointment only, offering early guests a rare opportunity to experience the sanctuary in its formative stage.
A wild experience without leaving central Uganda
CTC offers a range of guided encounters designed to bring visitors closer to wildlife in a safe, ethical, and deeply memorable way.

All experiences are led by trained handlers and conservation professionals, with animal welfare as the top priority.
Guests explore different wildlife sectors, some of which feature free-roaming animals in spacious, natural, fenced environments. The center is home to an impressive diversity of species, including:
Lions, spotted and striped hyenas, African painted dogs, black-backed and side-striped jackals, serval and caracal cats, bat-eared foxes, zebras (Lake Mburo and Kidepo maneless), warthogs, parrots, waterbucks, impalas, Uganda kob, oribis, crocodiles, tortoises, snakes, iguanas, chameleons, lemurs, bushbabies, giraffes, and horses.
For a facility so close to Kampala, this level of biodiversity is extraordinary, offering an authentic wildlife experience without the long drives of traditional safaris.

A sanctuary supporting real conservation work
Every visit to CTC directly contributes to conservation, supporting habitat expansion, veterinary care, animal rescues, and the development of what will become Uganda’s first large-scale privately owned conservation and education facility. Each experience is not just memorable, but meaningful.

Perfect for busy professionals, families, and teams
One of CTC’s greatest strengths is accessibility. Located less than 15 minutes from Mpigi and 36 kilometres from Kampala along Masaka Road, it is ideal for:
- A morning escape before returning to the office
- A half-day corporate retreat
- A family weekend activity
- A convenient addition to a tourist itinerary
No long travel hours or overnight stays required.
How to get there
From Kampala, take Masaka Road toward Mpigi Town. Immediately after Mpigi, follow the signage toward Butambala District. The road is smooth and suitable for both small cars and SUVs. Full directions are shared upon booking.
What the future holds
CTC is in the final stages of developing cottages, dining areas, and enhanced visitor facilities, transforming the centre into a full safari escape just minutes from Kampala. Planned additions include East African resident rates, expanded tour options, educational programmes, and conservation research spaces.

Even in its soft-opening phase, CTC is already reshaping wildlife tourism in Uganda, proving that you don’t need to travel far to encounter Africa’s most iconic animals.
Sometimes, the wild is closer than you think.
